A Street with a Mafia Murder, Atanas Doychev, Sofia

Posted by maria dimitrova

The Gotse Delchev, formerly Emil Markov, neighbourhood is right next to the South Park. It is known for the high concentration of drug dealers, one of the highest in Sofia.

I live in Deyan Belishki St. From my balcony I can see my street from one end to the other, despite the curve in the middle. My block of flats is right at the curve: in one direction the street ends into the South Park, at the other end Vitosha Mountain can be seen.

At first sight my street is not bad looking and allows for a good walk – there is a number of small parks around. If you want to go shopping, there is plenty of choice.

But here are some brief statistics about crime in Deyan Belishki St.:

      • light car accidents resulting from the street’s small width and the heavy traffic

      • some guy who was on drugs recently crashed at a really high speed into the cars of two of my neighbours

      • and, last but not least, the most interesting case – the murder of Mrs. Shinka Manova, a senior officer at  the Customs Administration who had links with the mafia.

How would you feel if you were woken up by bullets and the crash of a jeep into your building? How would you feel if your street was the scene of journalistic and police investigation?

My street is not very long but long enough to make me think when I am going to the photo studio nearby…
